"Here are some of the links I have to Robert Hogg, the chap who built Cherswud and lived here till he died in 1945. I have some further hard copy information also, including a photo of him sitting in the downstairs office.
You can see that he was a very active socialist who campaigned for worker's rights - particularly those of women. He was a contemporary of Michael Joseph Savage (NZ's first Labour PM) as you can see from the first photo. He was very influential in early Labour politics. He was Editor of a number of publications, notably NZ Truth, until he fell out with them about politics!
He and his wife, Mary, bequeathed their considerable collection of books to the Alexander Turnbull Library - and the books are the reason the floors are so strong in the house!
We have an original publication of one of his poetry anthologies (he wrote many under the name Robin Blochairn) and the plaque above the front door hides an amusing story of the early days in the neighbourhood".
